The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 expands the amount of the Child Tax Credit families can claim for dependent children under the age of 17 for the 2021 tax year and requires the U.S. Department of the Treasury to send up to 50 percent of the estimated credit amount to families in advance of filing a 2021 tax return. The Internal Revenue Service has stated that the payments will be issued monthly starting in July 2021. These payments are exempt from federal offset for people who owe past-due child support.  This means that the U.S. Department of the Treasury will not take the amount of past-due child support owed and send that amount to the Child Support Program.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provides a third round of Economic Impact Payments in the amount of $1400.  These payments are exempt from federal offset for people who owe past-due child support.  This means that the U.S. Department of the Treasury will not take the amount of past-due child support owed and send that amount to the Child Support Program.

The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 provides a second round of Economic Impact Payments in the amount of $600. While these payments were exempt from federal offset for people who owe past-due child support if issued as a direct payment, the Internal Revenue Service has stated that the amount may be offset if claimed as a Recovery Rebate Credit when filing a 2020 tax return. This means that if the $600 payment is issued as a federal income tax refund, the U.S. Department of the Treasury will take the amount of past-due child support owed and send that amount to the Child Support Program.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides $1200 cash payments. Under federal law, these payments are subject to federal offset for people who owe past-due support. This means the U.S. Department of the Treasury will take the amount of past-due support owed from the Economic Impact Payment and send that amount to the Child Support Program.

One of the highest priorities at the Florida Department of Revenue Child Support Program is protecting your information. Please know that the Program will never call or email you to ask for your personal information, unless a team member is working on your child support case and needs to clarify information that has been previously requested or provided by you. The Program will never call to ask you for your credit card information or credit card payments.

If you visit a Child Support office, you will need to bring a photo ID or be prepared to provide other information about yourself to verify your identity. If you call the Child Support Program, we will ask you to verify information such as your name, Social Security number, date of birth, mailing address, email and phone number to assist you further.

Remember, the main phone numbers for the Child Support Program are on the Program’s Contact page. Emails from the Department will always come from an email address ending in @floridarevenue.com.
